Council recently sought community feedback on the proposal to rename the footbridge over Willimigongon Creek on Clarke Street in Mount Macedon to the “Christine Walker Footbridge”, in honour of the late Christine Walker, who sadly passed away on 1 August 2025 while serving as a South Ward Councillor.
A new footbridge was completed in late August 2025. As Christine was an advocate for the replacement of this footbridge, it is considered a respectful way to further acknowledge her contribution and celebrate her community life in recognition with one of her passions.
Approval has been granted by the Walker family to proceed with a submission to Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) following the community consultation process. Council has already sought and had approval for an exemption of this proposal under the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria, as the usual requirement is to wait two years after a person’s passing before commemorative naming can be applied for.
Should the Registrar approve the naming proposal, it will be gazetted and registered. Following the formal notification, Council officers would then arrange the installation of the relevant signage, and inform the community of the Registrar’s decision through the website and social media channels.
Further details about the Naming Rules can be found here.
