Consultation background - why and what
Septic tank systems, also known as wastewater management systems, are installed to treat any onsite wastewater produced on a property. These systems are only installed in areas where a reticulated sewerage system is not available.
Council has identified up to 50 properties south-west of the Gisborne town centre, which do not currently have access to mains wastewater infrastructure maintained by Greater Western Water, but surrounding properties are connected to this infrastructure.
To support a proposal to Greater Western Water, which will not fund any potential project without evidence of the need for sewerage, Council is seeking to investigate the number and condition of septic tanks in this identified area, and assess the risk these tank systems pose to the waterways and other residents.
Findings will be presented in a report to Greater Western Water in order for them to consider an updated sewerage scheme for properties in this area.
It is a landowner's responsibility to maintain their septic system - more information about these systems can be found on Council's website.
