Council proposing to rename a section of Wills Street, between Walsh Street and Chisholm Avenue in Malmsbury to fix address numbering errors.

The change will make sure existing and future properties have accurate and consistent street numbers.

The proposed new name is:

McCreery Court

Council has worked with Malmsbury Historical Society to identify an opportunity to commemorate women who have made significant contributions to the Malmsbury community.

We are pleased to recommend the name McCreery which acknowledges the significant roles that the McCreery women have played in the healthcare of the community over three decades.

The recommendation is to rename the section of road McCreery Court. Information detailing their substantial community contributions is provided in this letter from the Malmsbury Historical Society.

When preparing street numbers for new properties between Chisholm Avenue and Wills Street, Council discovered an irregularity in the street numbering.

The numbering currently increases south from Walsh Street to Mitchell Street. However, 3 properties that still need addresses sit north of Walsh Street.

To fix this, Council looked at two options:

  1. Renumber all of Wills Street
    • Start numbering from Chisholm Avenue heading south.
    • This would mean every property on Wills Street would need a new number and updated street name suffix.
    • This is a significant administrative burden on both residents and Council
  2. Rename only the short northern section
    • Apply a new name to the section between Walsh Street and Chisholm Avenue.
    • This approach minimises disruption and allows correct numbering for current and future properties.

Because Option 2 has the least impact, Council is moving forward with this approach.

Council must follow the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria set by Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) when naming any road or public place.

In selecting a new name, Council worked closely with the Malmsbury Historical Society and local residents. Together, they agreed on McCreery Court, recognising the McCreery family’s long history in the area.

Members of the McCreery family provided nursing and midwifery services from homes in the vicinity of the new road, and served in the military. Naming the road after them honours their contribution to the community and reflects Malmsbury’s heritage.
