Council is dedicated to improving road safety for all users, including through the design and construction of safer road systems. Ensuring safety is a shared responsibility however — the public also needs to make responsible choices while using our roads and footpaths.

Road safety can be improved through infrastructure upgrades, road safety education, enforcement support, and close collaboration with agencies such as Victoria Police, the Department of Transport and Planning, and all levels of government.

Project consultation

Certain projects are more straightforward than others or there may be less non-negotiable elements, and they may not necessarily benefit from community feedback.

For these projects, Council may adopt an 'inform' approach and communicate the proposals in advance of construction starting, generally with residents and businesses directly relevant to the project area.

Other projects will benefit from community feedback to help shape the final designs and outcomes - Council may adopt a 'consult' approach for these projects, and invite community feedback formally through this platform.

  • Roundabout - Hamilton/Aitken streets, Gisborne

    This multi-stage project aims to enhance road and pedestrian safety, by reconfiguring the current roundabout to include new crossings and landscaping.

    This project is funded under the Victorian Government's Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.

  • Intersection - Hamilton/Brantome streets, Gisborne

    Council proposes a roundabout with raised pedestrian crossings (wombat crossings) at the Brantome Street and Hamilton Street intersection in Gisborne.

    This project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and promote pedestrian-friendly urban planning, with added traffic calming and universal design for better accessibility.

    This project is jointly funded under the Victorian Government/Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

  • New Street, Kyneton

    A new raised pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing) is proposed along New Street in Kyneton, close to the intersection of High Street.

    This project is funded under the Victorian Government's Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.

  • Prince Street, Gisborne

    Council is proposing a raised pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing) on Prince Street in Gisborne, between Robertson and Hamilton streets (upgrading an existing crossing point).

    This will create a safer and more convenient crossing point for pedestrians, while encouraging road users to slow down in the area.

    This project is funded under the Victorian Government/Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Projects completed

The following pedestrian and road safety improvement projects have been delivered.

  • Fisher Street/Aitken Street, Gisborne

    Pedestrian safety has been improved – particularly for nearby school students – through the installation of a wombat crossing and other associated works at the intersection of Fisher Street and Aitken Street in Gisborne.

    This project was funded under the Victorian Government's Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.

  • Riddells Creek shopping precinct

    A suite of significant works to improve road and pedestrian safety have been completed in the Riddells Creek town centre, as part of Council’s 2024-25 Capital Works Program and aligning with the Riddells Creek Movement Network Plan.

    These important works were funded through a combination of the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Local Government Grant Program, the Victorian Government’s Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program and Council.

  • Epping Street, Kyneton

    A new wombat crossing has been installed at this location, improving pedestrian safety – particularly for nearby school students.

    This project was funded under the Australian and Victorian governments’ jointly funded 2023-2025 Road Safety Program (School Safety Improvement), with associated works funded by Council.

  • High Street service lane, Woodend

    Works to improve pedestrian safety on High Street in Woodend (in front of the newsagency) included removal of the existing platforms on either side of the service lane, and installation of a raised pedestrian platform (wombat crossing).

    This project was funded under the Victorian Government's Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.

  • Fisher Street school crossing, Gisborne

    This project improved pedestrian safety by installing a raised pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing) at the existing Fisher Street school crossing in Gisborne (in front of the primary school).
