We are developing a new Public Art Policy to guide how public art is proposed, assessed, approved and managed across the shire.

We’re seeking your input to help shape the policy — including what public art could look like, where it should be located, and how it should be managed in our public spaces.

What is public art?

Public art is artwork created by professional artists for public spaces. It is often designed specifically for its location, responding to the social, historical, environmental or physical context of the site.

Public art can take many forms, including sculpture, murals, architectural features, installations, lighting, town entry statements, streetscape elements and decorative paving.

It reflects a wide range of artistic styles and practices — from traditional to contemporary — and may be permanent or temporary.

About our current Public Art Policy

Our current Public Art Policy was adopted in 2019.

It provides a clear and transparent process for assessing and making decisions about the design, placement and conservation of art in public spaces in the Macedon Ranges Shire, with the aim of ensuring artworks are:

  • Strategically planned regarding location and maintenance requirements
  • Appropriate to their context including alignment with Indigenous heritage, if known
  • Relevant to the local community in terms of content and meaning
  • Supported by the local community (its purpose as well as design, size and location)
  • Of excellent quality and high aesthetic value (durable materials, respectful design)
  • No danger to people or the environment
