Site context and background

Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve is located centrally within Riddells Creek. The reserve comprises 12.35 hectares of open space, which is highly valued by its growing local community.

The site offers a variety of amenities such as a sports oval, cricket nets, netball and tennis courts, indoor leisure centre, skate park, playground, sports pavilion, scout hall, associated park infrastructure, and a dog off-leash area. Unfortunately, much of the built form is reaching its end-of-life phase and requires renewal.

An Outline Development Plan for Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve was prepared in 2009, however the Plan no longer responds to the significant changes to sporting facility standards, an increase in female participation in sports such as AFL and soccer, and the increasing demand and expectations for informal recreational opportunities which have occurred in recent years.

Additionally, developer funding contributions towards reserve upgrades have already been committed as part of the Amess Road Precinct Structure Plan, approved by the Victorian Government in August 2025.

The Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve Master Plan will establish a clear vision and direction for future development and activation of the reserve by:

  • responding to the growing and changing needs of the community.
  • providing fit-for-purpose sporting infrastructure to meet the training and competition requirements for local level sport
  • establishing infrastructure to support active, passive and informal recreational pursuits
  • improving landscape amenity, safety, accessibility and connectivity to attract a diverse range of users to the reserve
  • preparing an action plan which outlines the costs, timeframes and implementation responsibilities.

Once adopted, the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve Master Plan will form the blueprint for development ensuring maximum benefit for the community and become an advocacy piece for external funding opportunities.

Next steps

Sports and recreation planning company Simon Leisure Consulting has been engaged to lead the development of the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve Master Plan.

Site appraisals and early consultation with key stakeholders to the reserve - such as user groups - is currently underway, and we expect to consult with the broader community initially in February 2026.
