Speed limit reduction implementation and Gisborne roundabout updates

24 February 2026

Proposed speed limit reductions

Council has received formal approval from Department of Transport & Planning (DTP) to proceed with implementation of the new speed signage plans for area-wide speed reduction in the Riddells Creek, Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton town centres, following earlier community consultation on these proposals and Council's response to feedback received.

Council’s next step to progress these projects is to tender and engage a contractor to undertake installation of these signs. Subject to contractor engagement and resources and stock availability, it is hoped to have the new area-wide speed reductions implemented over the next couple of months.

Council thanks the community for their earlier feedback and support in this road safety initiative. You can read more about each proposal and a brief summary of feedback received on the respective project pages:

These projects are being delivered with thanks to investment through the Victorian Government's Department of Transport and Planning/Transport Accident Commission Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Proposed roundabout improvements in Gisborne

Planning for proposed roundabout upgrades is progressing at two key intersections in Gisborne:

Upgrades to the existing roundabout at Aitken/Hamilton streets

Delays during the design stage of this project mean that timelines to deliver these proposed upgrades have changed since the last update in July 2025, and the works are now expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

Upgrades to transform the existing intersection at Brantome/Hamilton streets into a compact roundabout

Similarly, these works have also been delayed are now expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

The speed limit reduction proposals and the proposed upgrades to the Brantome/Hamilton street intersection are being delivered with thanks to investment through the Victorian Government's Department of Transport and Planning/Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

The first stage of proposed upgrades to the Aitken/Hamilton street roundabout are being delivered through the Victorian Government's Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program (IP43).
